Public vs. Private Adoption Agencies

Compare public child-welfare agencies and private adoption agencies, including services, costs, oversight, matching, and post-adoption support.

Public agencies are government child-welfare departments or their county, tribal, or contracted partners. Private agencies are independent organizations licensed to provide specified adoption services.

Neither category is automatically better. The appropriate choice depends on the adoption type, services, oversight, cost, and family’s preparation.
